When we visited and also lived in California, we found three
beaches worth revisiting that weren't hampered by vollyball
nets :) and weren't just flat and plain looking. The famous
beach at Carmel, is on a rise with the ocean below. I don't
know about the waters' temp. but it would probably be the
same all along the coastline. The windswept Cypris trees
are very pretty and lend to the landscape. The second and also popular where they film alot of commercials, is Leo Carrillo state beach. This was named after the late actor of
the 50's who played Poncho, on the Cisco Kid on TV. His
descendants go back to early San Diego. We enjoyed going there many times. We also found that there are beaches that charge for parking close to the LA area. So if you don't pay
to park, you don't go thru the entrance to the beach.
There is one other I could recommend in northern Calif.
and it is outside of Pacific Grove, where the Monarc butter-
flies call home. I've only stepped into the ocean in Calif.
once, and it was near Long Beach. But judging from the
people who didn't stay in, I assume the water wasn't all that
'warm'. Generally speaking, the further south you go, the
warmer the water, due to the sun beating down in summer.
The further north, you take your chances on the swim factor.

The water heads south along the west coast from Alaska, so it's cold even in California. If that is what you are looking for you need to go as far south as possible...that would mean San Diego. Try the beach in front of the historic Del Coronado hotel, it's large and not too crowded (at least most of the time). That would go for the fishing too, as SD has a large fleet of charter boats for sports fishing. June should be warm, but it's not hot yet.
