I have an unusual 55 gallon fish tank and it has cornners underneath the tank and we recently had severe thunderstorms with hail and now my 55 gallon fish aquarium has eleast four cracks. Now I was told that it was salvageable but that I would have to build a plattform for it because without the plattform it would give way and the water would be all over the floor.
Can you help me please? Thank you. From Diane Perez

I assume its the bottom that's cracked, if so and there's no water in it measure the bottom piece, if the tank is put together with silicone sealant and opaque rubbery substance you can cut this out drop the broken piece out and then replace with the new glass and silicone it into place, if however that's in practical measure the glass from the inside and drop the new glass into the bottom and silicone it in from there. If you use 10/15mm thickness you should have no problem with it.

four cracks. i wouldn't even try to salvage with silicon. i would be too nervous. if you can save for a new 55 gallon, i saw one at petco for 159. however if you don't have it and want to try to save what you have, i would proceed slowly after repair. add water and wait. add water and wait to see how it handles the pressure. sounds risky and i would always be afraid. maybe if the cracks were elsewhere, i would make an attempt. i would pay for a new one or check craiglist.org for peace of mind.

acrylic is an alternative if you have severe thunderstorms often. wayyyy more expense though.

hope things work out. email me and let me know how you make out.

if the crack is only on one side, you can just bring it to any aluminum and glass shop for repair. If the crack is at the bottom, better replace the whole bottom panel. Silicon seals wouldn't do much good for your tank size. 50-55 gallon tanks (hi strip) usually costs 1,200 brand new. so check your expenses, it might be cheaper to buy a new one if several panels are cracked.

Oscars can get VERY great. fifty 5 gallons in simple terms isn't adequate by then to hold even one among them (by then it could have eaten the others). Use specialized acquarium sealant to repair the leak, any first rate expert save will sell it.
