As a group, today's players are much more athletic, no question... But players in the 90's and 80's (let alone the era of Wilt and Russell) were light-years ahead in terms of their fundamental skills. Sure, there are a couple of exceptions here and there, but there hasn't been a Jordan equivalent since Jordan. Kobe is the closest thing, but he's not as game-smart as MJ.
Wilt was simply a physical freak for his time, much like Shaq today. Too big, too strong, too quick- an unstoppable offensive force. But Wilt was intimidating on the defensive end, as was Bill Russell and Bill Walton. Shaq is average on D- guys like Ben Wallace, Tim Duncan and even Marcus Camby are *much* better defenders. In fact, I think all the other marquis centers of the 90's - Olajuwon, The Admiral, Ewing- were vastly better defenders than Shaq.
Guys like Magic, Dr J, Bird, Barkley, Malone and MJ- they knew how to WIN GAMES, and were at their best when the games counted most... T-Mac, KG, Dirk- sometimes they deliver, sometimes they don't. Vinsanity- awesome in dunk contests. but in games he's merely a good player.
Old school beats the new breed!
--
BillH, as far as Shaq's defense- I'm saying he was average for a guy of his size. Certainly he was better than the average NBA forward of 6'9"... Quick guards could drive past him and shooters could shoot over him.
Maybe in his Orlando days he was better- I'll admit I didn't see much of him back then, since I'm on the West Coast.
In his Laker days he wasn't a BAD defender, but merely what you'd expect from a guy of his size, nothing more. Sure he'd make blocks and rebound but he didn't dominate the paint and entirely ruin opponent's offensive schemes like other top-tier centers.

The elite players of past eras were much better basketball players. They HAD to be. Back when Wilt began his career, there were only 9 NBA teams. (16 teams make the playoffs now - TOO MANY!) You had to be elite if you were even going to MAKE the team. Look at it this way: cut today's 30 teams down to 9 by picking the top 108 (12 guys per team, 9 teams) out of the 360 in the league. That's about 2/3 of the guys who would be out of the NBA. Even in the '80s when Larry Legend and Magic ruled the NBA there were only 22 teams. That equates to 264 players which would take away about 1/3 of the players in today's NBA.
Of course they were better basketball players - they HAD to be just to make the league. Today's players may be more athletic but they are most definitely NOT better basketball players. It's really sad to see players who can't shoot layups and jump hooks with either hand, or dribble with either hand, or pass with two hands, or use proper footwork to put them at an advantage. All of these and much more are fundamentals which have been lost with the league going more athletic.
C-Man - you're saying Shaq is average on D. Well, in his prime he was a beast on D. He was three times voted All-Defensive Second Team. Second best in the NBA is not average. What you see now is a shadow of what Shaq was in his prime. The only thing he couldn't do was shoot free throws. His footwork is STILL awesome, which is why he gets inside position to dunk so often. And he dribbles with either hand and shoots short hooks both left and right handed - has done it since his rookie season. But I do agree that old-school players were better basketball players, not necessarily better athletes.

interestingly that all of us is the two a Bulls fan or a Lakers fan on right here. properly i'm neither. i'm a Pistons fan, and between the biggest Jordan Haters there are. regardless of the undeniable fact that, as much because it pains me to assert it, Jordan became the best all around participant to ever play interior the NBA. Lakers followers will say "He had Pippen", "He had a large helping team". Yeah, properly so did Kobe till he ran them out of city. Shaq became no slouch! P.S. I cant stand Shaq the two. Its genuine that Kobe is emulating what Jordan did while it contains strikes and such. there is not any doubt Kobe can score. Heck, I dont be attentive to if there's a present day participant i'd somewhat have the ball in a grab, yet he's not any Jordan. (neither is James for that count) Jordan is a one and basically. He replaced the interest as all of us be attentive to it. Kobe, James, and all of us else is merely attempting to seize him. till somebody modifications the interest in a manner that the two fits or supersedes what Jordan did than, there is not any "different Jordan" nonetheless bypass PISTONS!

past players are better than the present players. just look on the credentials of the past players. Michael Jordan, 6 NBA championships. has broke and set many NBA records. all time leading in points per game. 37 ppg in one season. 30+ ppg in the playoffs. what more can you ask for. its a sell out every time Jordan plays whether it's their home court or not. don't say that they just have a great team because if you compare the depths of the team now they are almost the same or deeper.
wilt chamberlain, can you count the numbers of championship rings he wears?
