After 7 yrs of marriage, it's not uncommon for someone to stray...they get the "itch" for something different. I don't know why 7 yrs was chosen, unless statistically it seemed to be a common period of time for people to get bored with their marriage and want to try someone else.

It's the concept that after 7 years of marriage, the partners start getting bored and start looking around for an affair before they are too old. Strong marriages with kids tend to lessen this to a degree. It's nothing scientific. It's similar to the "mid-life crisis"

7 year itch = tired of eating "corn flakes" for 7 years and "wanting something else". In this case, its being with the same person when thinking that the grass is greener on the other side syndrome.
