First make sure they have current insurance. Call the insurance company and check, when you get insurance the paperwork shows that you have it for a year. However, insurance can be canceled at any time. Get references and CALL them. Most people ask for references but never bother to call them. If your state requires a license then make sure they are licensed as well.

The BB in most areas is a joke. Go to the County and check through the licensing division, see if he has a license. Then ask for his bond and check that or his insurance and Workman's comp. If he's paid up his Workman's comp he'll be working for awhile.
Ask for references. Most contractors are proud of their work and are willing to give you all their references, I was.
If you go through a reliable company like Home Depot, Westinghouse, or some other big company you shouldn't have any trouble. Stay any from someone you don't know that "has a deal for you" they're around. They call them contractors specials or Saturday night specials.

Check their record on BBB.com.
Get references.
Check your County's online civil records to see if anyone has filed a lawsuit against them.
