Ok, the Russians have just tested two new missile systems to replace their aging stockpiles of ss20 and ss18 rockets. They say that the tests were in responce to America integrating poland and other states (former warsaw pact) in their new Missile defense system...this is a very damning statement. They are also increasing their force levels across the board.
A long time ago Kennedy took the world to the brink of war over soviet missiles in cuba, now America is condeming this new move by russia and moaning about Putin withdrawing from the Convential Forces Europe accord (This treaty set limits for the number and strengh of soviet forces west of the Ural mountains). Despite the fact that they choose to set up bases and integrate these states into the US Missile defence net, the Americans are upset.
My question has three parts:
1. Is this a classic case of double standards?
2. is this a new cold world in the makings?
3. Just how simple minded are American policy makers?

To all,

Im pointing out that an arms race is the last thing we need right now. Also i would like to point out that once apon a time i sat through some very lengthy seminars on the effects of tactical nuclear wepons and was trained to get in and out of NBC kit in a hurry... do the math!
Im no pinko/peace activist just a man who knows what "ground zero" under a one megaton air burst is like.

JC, dont feel bad.. i happen to understand your possition and agree to a point. A cold war is not a bad thing for the world either... as all the little nations will have to ask permission from a superpower before they start there little wars...

My worry is a new arms race... think drednaughts and WWI... the russians say this new system will defeat the US defence net, if so the americans will either improve the net or build a thousand new missiles to even the playing field... you see where this is going? we were very lucky last time (Reagan had Gorbachof) .Putin isnt the fluffy kind of Russian...

This doesn't surprise me at all.

GW Bush said he wanted to start a cold war again, when he was giving campaign speeches before his first term as president. I almost said, before he was elected, but I refuse to say that of him, since I think it's evident he cheated his way in.
And wasn't really elected.

Now, those campaign speeches were only to specific groups, while he was out on the campaign trail. I read the speeches back then. Mainly because, I knew the man was trouble, thanks to his criminal history; and of course that he is a Bush, and a Republican.

1. Yes. On the face of it.
However, because the USA, as in Bush and co. want a Cold War; in reality I would say they don't have double standards.

2. Yes. It was planned already several years ago. As I pointed out above. Lord knows what the USA 'think tanks' are thinking when they come up with these plans though.

3. Quite simple. They think they are being very clever and ingenious though.

My next questioning thought is why do these people want a Cold War, and what benefits does a Cold War have, and who benefits.

They actually believe a Cold War is good, because then we'll be 'peaceful', and every country will behave themselves, because if they don't it will be 'the end of the world'; because one false move and all the missiles all over the world will be going off at once. That's in their heads. Whether it's the actual truth of the situation, I'll reserve judgment on that, because I'm a skeptic and so don't believe anything these people tell us, or tell other countries, or anyone else.

I tend to think they always have a hidden agenda, which basically equals making themselves personally more rich and powerful. They are driven by greed and vanity.

I've been wishing Margaret Thatcher would get back and give those boys a good telling off, and sort them out, like she did back in the Reagan era. Blair and his lot seem incapable of such brilliance, and diplomacy. Is anyone around in British politics who is capable?
If Al Gore becomes President will he and his party support the Cold War? Does Hilary Clinton? I don't think so. These people are going to be up next I'd think and hope.
Unless somehow those Republicans cheat again. If they don't get in power, they make everyone's life even more of a misery than when they are in power though.

How do we stop them?

They are simple minded bullies I'd say.

I feel like a traitor to all the liberal minded people out there and I'm no fan of that psycho Bush... but... rightly or wrongly I would much rather countries like the US be the ones with the most powerful weapons. Lets be realistic about the sort of countries the US want to stop having these weapons, they are brutish regimes that pretend to be democracies but are really dictatorships. If you speak out against their regime you are murdered, no freedom of speech, terrible human rights records (think Alexander Litvinyenko, the Russian who met a horrible death, allegedly ordered by Putin because he'd been revealing how corrupt he was). So I know that I am happy for these terrifying regimes to not have nuclear weapons. We shouldn't have them either but surely the less countries that have them the better? Especially if they are corrupt (I realise all governments are corrupt to a certain degree but at least if I feel like it I can go and stand in the middle of London and shout "Tony Blair is a w****r" without being poisoned!). I for one am glad that the US is the most powerful nation, much rather them than some of the countries that I can think of.

I think the Americans and the British are lining Putin up for some kind of attack it probably has to do with the fact that putin publicly opposed the war. I think that you can't blame him for wanting to protect his country. The Coalition as they like to call themselves are totally out of control causing trouble everywhere. What gives them the right to be armed up to the nine while telling everybody else what weapons they can and can't have. If Bush and Blair stopped going around causing wars willy Nelly than he probably wouldn't feel the need to upgrade his nuclear weapons.

It's not the same as the Cold War. In the Cold War, the two sides were distinguished by radically different political and economic systems, both expansionist in nature. Now, Russia and the West are both pretty much free market democracies, more or less. They aren't arguing about ideology. They are opponents within the same system. They could realign themselves at any time, depending on the economic situation.

Yes this is double standards.

Yes that's a new cold war,but it's not necessary bad thing as this world HAS to be bipolar, like black and white, like earth and sky, like truth and lie. After Soviet Union collapsed look what happened US got out of order and now we are in deep mess,it affected whole world, all over the world we paying much more for energy resources.

I'm glad that Russians tested new ballistic rocket with multiple warheads that is impossible to intercept with US antimissile systems. With all the oil/gas money flawing into Russian budget (thanks to GWB) Putin can afford arms race, and let's face it Russians have a talent when it comes to weapons, AK-47,Katusha,MIG,recently tested rocket...few to name.

1. Of course! America is full of double standards. It is a government of hypocrites, as are many governments of powerful nations.
2. Did the Cold War truly ever end? Sure, the government says it did, and we believed them because everyone knows duck-and-cover is bogus, and the constant fear of nuclear fallout is overwhelming. The nation risked revolution if such fear continued.
3. You know, I'm quite conflicted about this myself. On the outside it appears as though they are nitwits, quite possibly borderline-retarded. On the other hand, they make their living conning and deceiving people. That certainly takes intellect.

What? You want us to play fair?

Sure, there are double standards.

And cold wars will always be ongoing between political rivals.

As for simple minds, who says things need to be complicated. Project strength where possible.
