I'm going this summer to check it out. What neighborhoods are decent & which ones should I avoid? In other words: in what area should I go apt. hunting? I can't afford to spend more than $700 a month for rent either on a decent one a a decent NON GHETTO hood.

sure anything is possible....forget the numbers for now, by the time you arrive in Denver, the numbers will change anyway. you can find a place, may not be one bedroom, maybe so for around $700...also look into www.craighslist.org for some ideas about rental community; www.denverpost.com and other local newspaper website like www.rockymountainnews.com, www.apartment.com and www.rent.com or drop me a line and i'll give you some update time to time for good deals on apartment rental.

It's the same tradeoff as any city.
Go farther out, you get more for your money, and your commute worsens. If that's your strategy, some of Aurora is very nice (other parts not so much). Or you could go for a California style commute and live in Castle Rock or Lafayette.
Go closer in, easier commute, more urban activities, less space, less safety. I'll bet some searching would locate a studio for that in the major new developments near the South Platte Valley or on Capitol Hill, which is urban, but not really bad.
You'll almost certainly need to find out where you'll be working first. Denver has East Coast style commutes, lots of traffic.

I'm actually moving back to the Denver area at the end of the month and I am moving into a 1 bdrm in the Cherry Creek denver area that is only $600. You may want to check it out. I think the apartments are called Creekside. There are a TON of apartments in that area also, if Creekside isn't what you are looking for.

$700 would be hard, I think. You may be able to find a 1br in an older building that has no other features (no workout, laundry, parking, etc.) in some of the central areas (N. Wash Park near Speer, Capital Hill, Baker). These would generally be in small buildings with on-site management and apartments advertised by signs in the window or out front (and not advertised for you to search easily on web).
Otherwise, you probably have to go south or burbs, and that would be somewhat dictated by your lifestyle (do you want access to public transport, where do you plan on working) and what your definition of "NON GHETTO" is.

Lifestyles vary in the metro Denver area. Houses are more and apartments are doable for what you suggested to spend. I like N.W.areas across the Front Range.
