1917, Lenin was the leader of the Bolsheviks who actually participated in the October revolution. The October revolution overthrew the Provisionary Government who had overthrown the Czar in Febuary. These actions led to the Russian Civil War and the eventual creation of the Soviet Union. Bear in mind that the calendar used in Russia at the time was the Julian calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar. To most of the rest of the world it was not October but November.
