A lie detector that actually works 100% of the time, so people couldn't lie in court. I read about one called a 'veridicator' in a science fiction book I read. I was intrigued.

Actually I think that was already attempted in the 1950's in movie theaters. They were attempting to draw more people to the theater and tried some pretty interesting techniques. I think some seats had shockers, scent that would be emitted and others I cannot remember.
My personal invention would be the paperless office - come on really - why is it not possible?

I would invent a process that would turn waste products into clean burning, renewable fuel. This would clean up the planet, eliminate green house gases, and be provided to the people with no hidden political agendas! So, there would be no hoarding the product. No wars fought to obtain the process. And as long as humans create waste, it would be never ending.

A translator that could tell you what someone really means to say instead of whatever filtered phrase just came out of their mouth.
Example: Statement - "That baby is breath taking"
Translated Statement - "That kid is so ugly I can't breathe"
1001 uses.
Think of the ramifications if used to decipher a politician's comments alone!

A translator that instantly converts what a person is saying to the language the person they are talking with understands and then converts the response and it would work even with animals.
A time-machine would also be cool.
