This morning, we found a bird in My hot water heater closet....and, just now, there was a bird flying around in My car......neither of them were black, and I think they may have been sparrows....
What are the superstitions around this??

I wouldn't have answered this because it is too involved but I don't want you thinking that someone may die. When people ask about 'omens' and receive only a negative answer it can make an individual very nervous. I will simply say that no, it does not have to mean death. The color of the bird means absolutely nothing. The idea of a black bird surrounding death comes from the fact that there are birds that feed off of dead bodies, human or otherwise, and some birds such as vultures will actually circle a body waiting for it to die. When such a site was witnessed people knew someone or something had died or was about to.

What it means is that you need to get a cap for your chimney so the birds can't get in that way, and keep your windows closed (or get screens).
In the house where I grew up, we used to get a few birds each winter caught in our fireplace chimney. They'd come for the warmth. We would have to pull down all the window shades and open the front door, which was very fortuitously placed opposite the fireplace. They'd see the light and fly out of the fireplace and right out the front door. And no one in our house died.
As far as I know, no bad omens.

I think it means that you left the windows open in your house and your car.

I get loads of birds in my house courtesy of where I live, but I haven't died yet !
