The cost to live in the dorms for my freshman year would be around $6880. I have heard great things about living in the dorms, but the thing is that my house is only 5 minutes away from the college I am going to. I don't think I can justify paying $7000 a year just to live in a dorm if my house is that close. What do you think?

5 minutes away is not what I'd call a commute. Just stay home and save the money. Being that close to school will allow you to be there as much as you want, run home between classes or for lunch, etc.

Not worth it. You can hang out with positive school mates (ones whom you can learn and share things that are beneficial for all) during break time or after school and experience the dorm athmosphere worth $7000. You can use that much money for some other purposes... like sponsoring a portion of it to feed and educate some starving children in Asia or Africa.
Would you even know that $7000 alone could feed and send 20 children to school for one year in the Philippines.

Try me.

Yeah, if your house is that close to the college, just suck it up and live with your parents for four years or until you can afford to get a roommate and live off campus.
