most of them probably did what was called whitling ,which was carving wood . I would say write letter but most of them did not know how to write or read . good luck .

some played a musical instrument- fifes, harmonicas. they sang popular songs, recited poetry, told jokes and riddles. they mended their uniforms, cleaned their weapons.
