there are lots of things that can go wrong when you start with fish. one big thing is they might be sick when you get them and its not your fault at all. it could be the water ph and acidity where you live. in this case its best to learn from what lives and what doesn't. i do very well with bettas and gouramis. i have tried a couple angelfish and they die in a couple of days -- so i generally stick with gouramis and bettas.

fyi some people find guppies very easy to keep and some don't have any luck at all -- and they keep other fish with no problems.

Probably just a touch of minor stress. Check your ammonia levels in the tank as well as the nitrites to be sure it's not one of those. Also make sure no other fish is bullying him too much.

As others said guppies normally hang around the top so you could expect this some, but not too much. They normally leave enough space to swim well along the surface.

Some livebearers are prone to developing the shimmies or Livebearer Disease This causes them to hang at the surface or in one spot in the tank and shake as they try to swim. If this seems to be the case 1 teaspoon of salt per 2 gallons of water will have him swimming normally within 24 hours.

Dont worry! Firstly, guppies predominately live at the top of the tank and secondly, if you just added the fish it may just be a little stressed from the changes in water conditions. Just leave it for a couple of days and the guppy will be fine...

you might want to keep an eye on the gouarmi he may be attacking your other fish (just pushing them around can stress them to death) gouarmi are known to be aggressive.

He's most likely stressed! Get your water tested for ammonia and nitrite levels!
