What should I use as a mouse pad for a laser mouse?

The cheap laminate on my computer desk is starting to show signs of wear from the mouse sliding on it. Any suggestions on what makes a good mouse pad for a laser mouse? I was thinking of getting another thick sheet of laminate or formica and put on top of the worn one.

Anything with a pattern or uneven surface should work.

You could do this, but we use laser mouses at work, and just use regular mouse pads.
