Two weeks ago, I put down some lawn seed that has germinated and grown about 1-2 inches. Unfortunately either the germination was incomplete or I did not lay down enough seed because what has grown, is not very thick. I would like to put down more seed while the soil is still in good condition, but I don't want to destroy the seed that has already sprouted by over-watering (in order to get the new seed started). Any suggestions?

Although you could put down seed now, I'd wait until after the first cutting. By that time your lawn has had time to get established.

Generally, it's best to plant grass seed in the late fall rather the spring. The weather warms up way too fast in the spring and the baby plants die before they get good root growth. That is what happened, and the result is that you got only 30% germination and that will actually die off by half or more this summer. Don't do anything, for now ... in the early fall, have your grass thatched, water it well for a week (no more than the maximum absorbency every day), and then plant the new seeds. You should see more germination because the weather is cooler, and next spring your lawn should look wonderful.

Grass seed is cheap. You are going to water anyway so you might as well thrown some seed down now. But I was rethinking the other guys answer and he is probably correct.

If it is really close to your first mowing you might be better off waiting. If you have to mow right away I suppose it could cause the new grass seed to blow everywhere except where you want it.

go ahead and do it now, you want lawn to establish as soon as possible correct? just avoid those areas during the first cutting and cut as high as your mower will allow for the first few times.remember to water in the morning and fertilize as directed.
