I have been breeding rabbit for 3 years now, and have raise 11 litters, i breed for show, breeding and pets. I do not do it for the money, since there is no money is breeding, and all my rabbits are well fed and cared for. I do sell the babies for money, and try to cover feed costs with the money i make on the babies i sell, but I'm not in this for the money, and most breeders aren't either, alot of breeders breed for show. so i ask again why are so many people against breeders?

I would say most people are against BYB's and millers.

Personally, I don't have any problems with responsible breeders, who show, do genetic testing, and do a whole lot more to better the breed. They take back any dogs that clients can't keep anymore, don't advertise, and have homes lined up wayy before the pups are born.

I think the main point of breeding would be to try your hardest to reach the standard. Breeding for pet-quality or just for your kids to see the miracle of birth is NOT ok. There are already too many pet quality animals in rescues and shelters. And if you want to show your kids the miracle of birth, show them a video or foster a pregnant dog.

I can only answer for myself. I am not against real breeders. The people who breed for health, good genetics, to advance the breed, etc.

I am however against all the backyard breeders out there. Especially on here you see kids come and ask questions about breeding. They have no idea what they are doing and think because they have a male and female than they are breeders. They know nothing about genetics, health, etc. They think they will make easy money, the only cost as two rabbits ($60) and then they make babies and the babies can be sold($60 each making a big profit). Never do they look into possible complication, proper feeding, pre and post natal care, etc. And then God forbid something happens they come on Yahoo answers asking for how to treat the animal without going to the vet.

That is what I am against. Unfortunatly there are so many backyard breeders on here asking for quick advice on breeding. I know that some are trying to become responsible breeders, learning about everything they can, from genetics, to care of babies, but the majority are irresponsible people looking to make a few quick babies and a just as quick buck. If I happen to offend one responsible breeder by answering thier question with the harsh reality of breeding, I hope they realize how many questions I answer that are from irresponsible people that have not weighed all the pros and cons and that my intention is to steer these people away from breeding.

Most people breed for money not to show. They breed several different kinds of animals then get overwhelmed so they end up being put down. All say they are rep. breeders and most are not. Now i don't have anything against true honest people but it will take everyone to fix the over population of animals so why not be responsible and slow up on the breeding for awhile, you and others could save lives. .................at least that's how I feel!

Maybe because there are more animals born than there are good homes to home them.
And not all homes(people) are trustworthy.
Overpopulation is easy to achieve. I dont know the population of the rabbits you breed in your area (city, town, or state)
but im sure overpopulation and more homeless animals could happen easily.
I love animals, i really do, but i also care about homelessness, overpopulation, and animal abuse.
Not all animals bred live in happy homes.

Because there are thousands of animals stuck in cages in shelters that need good homes. Many never get adopted and end up being put to sleep.
