As a Nurse's Aid for 5 years I believe that people with terminal illness or life threatening illness should have the right to die with dignity!

I have seen too many people pass in pain! Irreguardless of the amount of morphine administed. My only question for those who disagree is

How would you like to...

1) be turned every two hours and propped up by pillows because you can't move yourself?

2) have someone you barely know cleanse your gential areas after deficating or urinating all over yourself?

3) have your families greive horribly and be horrified by your apperance and your grasping ailing breathe?

4) drowned in your fluids building up in your lungs?

5) get sores on your feet, back, elbows, and butt from the stupid aid who doesn't move you enough?

6) spend your last hours of life with someone you don't know who's grown to care for you in the last few weeks of your life, and be sad for you and have to inform your family that you died in the night?

Personally I'd rather be able to avoid all of that! So yes I agree with Jack Kevorkian and I think he was doing a great service to those who wanted it. I don't think he violated the hippocratic oath because it also state "inflict no harm" personally keepign a dying patient a live and enduring the above pain and humuliation is inflicting harm.

I disagree with him as his is practiced on those who have their mental capacity!

Many Doc's, in hospitals, when a patient is terminal and in their final phases of dying, generally give them a much higher dose of Morphine that is not recognized as an appropriate dosage. It is generally given that way to suppress pain, breathing, and to hasten death!

I don't have a clue whether they will admit it, but I have refused in Nursing school do give the dose. The nurse then took the IM and gave it! So I have seen it practiced first hand!

Actually I think it may have been SC. Today the just shoot it into an IV line or a Heperin lock I believe!

I believe he believes that he's not violating the hippocratic oath.

It's not like he snuck up on these people to dose em to death!

They asked for assistance to die. Just about all were terminally ill patients in a lot of pain.

Until one of us has, say, cancer and is in terrible pain, I don't think we can pass judgment on their wishes.

Which leads me to Oregon being the only state in the nation with a comprehensive euthanasia program. Started in 1997 in October I believe, and has not reported a *single* problem since its inception. California is trying to pass a similar bill to establish a similar program.

I agree that there is a place for euthanasia in today's world, but I strongly disagree with how he chose to go about it. Kevorkian let his personal agenda drive his decisions, NOT what was in the best interest of the patient. There is a lot of potential for abuse in euthanasia, so it is imperative that objective criteria be adhered to...a signed and witnessed living will, a verified document stating the patient's terminal status in the near future, an evaluation of the patient to rule out clinical depression, the patient needs to be apprised of other end-of-life options available to them, and a professional team evaluation as to the appropriateness of choosing euthanasia. Kevorkian rarely even complied with one of those criteria...let alone all five.

I agree with the principal, but I do not agree with his methodology. Oregon has a law where the person administers a lethal dose of medication to themselves, but they have to put it in writing that this is what they want and they have to verbalize it twice.

We are kinder to our animals when they get sick than we are to our family. Death with dignity should be allowed.

I agree that people with terminal illnesses should be given an option to die with dignity. Dr K provided this but some believe he took it to far by treating people that had terminal but not life threating diseases. This was considered murder.

I had always rather seen people die in a respectable way than to blow their brains out in their own home. Personally, I think people should have the right to decide whether or not they want to undergo a doctor assisted suicide, and the government shouldn't play a part.
