It was by the Villiage People and yes, it is supposed to be about gay people in San Fran. (I thought it was older). Check out the link - I like the Pet Shop Boys version best.

thought it was about ambrosia creamed rice!
soz, could not resist, my dad wrote the score for the Brit Awards when they had the choirs singing behind them years ago and he did the score for that stupid ad!
yes, by all accounts it is written for gays and I think Neil Tennant wrote it! (Pet Shop Boys gay....soz guy)

I like the Pet Shop Boys, that's the only one I've ever heard of, and it sounds pretty "gay" to me, and it's great to dance and dream to.
