Sacagawea was the 16 year old wife of a French-Canadian trapper who assisted on the Lewis and Clark expedition as a guide and interpreter.

She was originally from the Mandan tribe from which she had been abducted as a child and by an amazing coincidence literally ran into her brother who was by then chief of the tribe.

Through her, Lewis and Clark were able to gain all kinds of assistance from the several tribes whose lands the expedition passed through, including food, shelter, transportation and information to enable them to find their way across the continent.

Sacagawea acted as a translator (along with several other members of the expedition) and also showed other Nations (because of the presence of her and her son) that the expedition was peaceful.

Sacagawea was a Shoshone, possibly from the Idaho or Montana area.

Two tribes that helped out (though most of the tribes they encountered helped in some way) were Sacagawea's tribe of Shoshone (who gave the expedition horses) and the Mandan village, of which Sacagawea had been adopted into, and was located near Fort Mandan (they gave food to the explorers and took them on buffalo hunts) .

Sacagawea acted as a guide with her husband to Lewis and Clark. One tribe I know that helped was the Shoeshine tribe. They provided the explorers with horses for thier journey over the Rocky Mountains

Sacajawea, a member of the Shoshone-Bannock tribe, served as an interpreter (along with her French-Canadian husband), collecting edible plants as well as showing the expedition's good will since a woman with a baby wouldn't accompany a war party.

Adolescent wife of a drunkard, abusive, french, fur trader. Intelligent woman who guided three stupid, ignorant white guys through the northwest passage. If it hadn't been for her, no one would know the names Lewis and Clark.
