Hi Nick,

You will want to study all of he biology and chemistry you can from now all the way through high school. It's a good idea to take a little Latin as well if your school offers Latin. Once you get to college you'll want to get s BS in Biology and then go after a MS in Ichthyology. There are many good schools all over the country that offer degrees in Ichthyology now and more every year it seems. Between now and then though, study. To help you get into the better schools, take a few extra classes like band or choir, those look good when you apply to college. Also try to volunteer as much as possible at a local Museum of Natural History, Aquarium or even Zoo or Botanical Garden. To become an Ichthyologist you will need to know more than just about the fish, but about the water and all the other things that live in the water with the fish, including the plants so all of those places can teach you things that will help you later on.

Reading books on fish as well as magazines will help prepare you as well. National Geographic Magazine as well as many of the fish keeping magazines can teach you things about fish that will help you later along with plenty of other magazine of course.

When I was your age I too wanted to be an Ichthyologist. I did many of the things I'm suggesting to you and also learned about some of them too late to use myself. It's not easy, lots of years of hard work but if you stick with it you too can become an Ichthyologist.

Best of luck my young friend

MM
