I have heard that doing that will reduce the value I recommend that you buy a glass case to put it in. That's what they do in museums and that should be relatively cheap.

You may want to try a water based varnish.
Got to a real hard ware store not a box store.
Discuss with the clerk/
The go home and on a piece of cloth or if you have something similar to the ball's skin.
Take an ink pen out and write your name
The try this application to see if it will run or fade.
This is an interesting prospect.

Also go to baseball sports and ask one of the people what they would do with an auto graphed baseball to protect the finish.

I am hopeful that I helped you on this

Your best bet is to put it in a glass case and avoid handling the ball itself regularly. You can get a glass case for sporting balls at hobby/crafts shops such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Most baseball card stores have some display cases as well.

Any sort of chemical you put on it may cause the ink to smear or degrade over time. Also, if you handle it too much, the oils from your hands can cause problems.

One question that is frequently asked, is how do I preserve an autograph on an autographed bat? a bat, such as this bat, signed by Ernie Banks. It's very critical that, that signature be preserved .

thers pva glue, u cud dunk it in that, because it dries clear. but if its not marker pen on it, then it might run the pen a bit. thers also décopage gloss glue, which is basically like a glaze or a varnish. u cud scratch it tho, even tho it is varnished..so y not seal it. u cud get 6 acrylic squares, and use silicone 2 seal it ito a box shape. or just a simple glass jewlry box maybe?
