If you are talking about infectious mononucleosis, aka glandular fever, it is caused by the Epstien-Barr virus (EBV). It causes an increase in Atypical lymphocytes, which are T-cells reacting under the influence of B-cell lymphocytes. The affected systems are the lymph nodes, which swell, and the liver, which may also be affected, giving rise to a hepatitis-type inflammation. Symptoms vary ; sufferers may be only mildly ill for a week or so, may be very sick for months, and/or may feel very tired for months. Or it could be fatal in rare cases, generally due to liver failure.
