Wounded pride has something to do with it. The surrounding Arab states lost a series of wars to Israel in the 20th century - in spite of superior numbers. Going back further, not that anyone is still alive to complain about it, the British, in the person of TH Lawrence, famously promised the Arabs autonomy after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. But, once the Ottoman Empire did fall, the great powers of Europe divied up the Middle East among themselves. Britain got the "Mandate of Palestine." Almost a century later, virtually all of that land is in the hands of Arabs again - except for Israel.
