how do YOU define poser?

Question

i say that its someone who listens to a certaint music [mostly emo and hardcore music] just to feel cool and to fit in with the hardcore kids. bands like hawthorne heights, panic! at the disco, and simple plan are poser bands to me.

what do you think?

when I was growing up...poseurs were the ones who carried around skateboards just to look cool

the actual definition is someone doing things just for the effect it has on others

I would add to this, that yes, they do things and wear things just so they will be perceived as part of a cool group

Adding to the above, a poser is someone who tries to impress others. But he/she alsos tries (too hard) to be "different"...and ends up being the same as the other "different" wannabes.

I'd also like to note that some poser bands mentioned above are not all poser...Avril used to be good (check out her first album if you like normal pop), and Fall Out Boy was "emo"ish even before they got caught on the mainstream.

Poser bands aren't just what people mentioned--they're people/bands who changed their music style after they became mainstream. Saddest thing that can happen to an artist, as someone once said.

I think a poser is someone who doesn't know anything about the type of music they claim to like and listens to it just because their friends do. This is just my opinion, but I don't agree that those bands are poser bands.

To me a poser is more in the attitude than in what you listen to. Like, if you only like one song by a band and don't even know any of the others or if you only like the band for the cute lead singer and "sing the words but don't know what it means." :) But that's just what I think a poser is.

A poser is someone who


1. Loves that his appearance let's people know they listen to rock.

2. Can't name two punk of the original punk bands

3. now days talks sh*t about bands they secretly love in order to look cool in front of others

4. can never admit to liking a hip-hop song (which is fine, even though most of it is crap, there are some cool hip-hop songs), but quickly changes clothing style around hip-hop kids.

5. Thinks Nirvana Invented Hard Rock

6. posers use this line alot, "oh my god !! you like them, wow you're now my best friend" then grab your hand and parade around the party telling people you're who new best friend.

7. Posers have alot of conversations where they name bands and say they are cool, but really it's just a contest to see who can name the most obscure bands, even though they wouldnt be able to name two of the bands songs.

8. Refuse to shop outside of hot topic

9. Are usually in High School , junior high, or are of (my age group) college age (i've seen them as old as 40 though)

10. are melodramatic

11. are constantely trying to be witty

12. think being a rocker means acting, dressing, and acting a certain way

13. are incapable of noticing when a band is completely comprised of other posers.

14. Watch Empire Records or SubUrbia and secretly are 're-charged' with Rocker energy, then go out to act them out in parking lots or fantasize about it.

15. Found out about Nightmare Before Christmas 2 or 3 years ago

16. Go to Rock Shows and don't know what to do, stand by the exits or the bar... look at each other randomely through out the show.. smile , bob their head and go back to standing still... then call everyone and say it was the most amazing night of their life

Will swear up and down they are metal fans.. but always name the same list of bands... metallica, megadeth, Ozzy/Sabbath, and the one who are a bit more 'cool' will name judas priest, motor head, or some stupid a** glam metal band, the younger ones will say something along the lines of linkin park, static-x , or killswitch, but again... can't name three songs other than the breakthrough singles.

18. will say they are into japanese culture, but it doesn't go beyond anime, adult swim, and cheap knock-off katanas hanging in their rooms

I think Avril Lavigne is the biggest poser on the planet. She claims to be this punk princess, more like prep princess. And the only way to prove herself is to be rude and spit in th faces of paparazzi and interviewers. Thats not being hardcore, I think thats being a dumb a**. She sings about really lame stuff and makes songs that really aren't making a difference in thi world. Like MCR who is such a great influence and is actually helping kids and getting them through tough times. I mean, "so whatever" tat will REALLY help the youth of America...and the fact that she is very stereotypical, and anything black she describes as gothic. She really really really annoys me. So, to me, Avril Lavigne is the definition of poser. But thats my opinion.

I think a poser is anyone who listens to music (of any kind) for the sole purpose of impressing someone or "fitting in" with a particular crowd, rather than being honest and true to themselves.

Poser = anyone who tries to be something they KNOW they are not. They try wayyyy too hard at it also. I think Fall out Boy is a poser band, as well as the ones you mentioned and Good Charlotte, MCR, AVRIL LAVIGNE, The Used, and the like

Personally I like Panic! At the Disco, but it's because they push the envelope and aren't like other bands that I've heard. Also, they actually play a variety of instruments.

I think a poser is someone who likes a band for the image they present regardless of the quality of their music. Like, I like P!ATD but i have a REASON. I also like classic Rock bands like, Journey, Boston, Chicago, but for different reasons. A poser to me is someone who "Likes" (or says they like) a band or a type of music to seem cool or to make themselves feel worldy or knowledgeable.
