C. But it was also to punish the defeated Confed's. By not being lenient the truth is the north was almost as responsible for Jim Crow as the south. The north was basically as intolerant of racial equality as the south as well. Hard fact, but true. Recall "Native Son" is set in Chicago. In the 1920's or 30's. The second Klan was all over the country, not just the south. "Native Son", think about it. The driver smother's a Jewish white girl by accident. She is drunk and he does not want to have sex. Be accused of her rape. He end's up going to the electric chair for her murder. Hobson's choice, forced on him by society back then. Either way, he die's. Today he could just have consensual sex, or more likely just hush, hush, her and take her inside. The point of the book is not just racial inequality, but a stupid waste of two live's set by social value's. And it was set in Chicago deliberately to make the point racial injustice did not just exist in the south.
