in 1971, a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, calling themselves "The Waldos", used to meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke cannabis at the Louis Pasteur statue

I'd take the claims to know the origins of this term with a grain of salt, since the San Rafael origin story only shows up 20 or so years after the term is in use. Most likely some guy just started claiming to have invented the term once the "police code" story was proven to be false.

I agree with Apostate. I did a very quick research on it last year and most of the sources were saying what he just mentioned. The group met at school at 4:20pm to smoke pot. I'm not sure how or when it caught on to a national holiday for stoners but eh, it is an amazing one. And the modern concept of this has nothing to do with Hitler's birthday, although he was born on the day.

It originated with the Ancient Druids. The only time that 420 was used is when they were into human sacrifices... It has a multitude of different reasons now, but that is when it was firsts used for the placement of the human body inorder to have it accepted by their gods............................................................
