This is a very philosophical question, and you can probably ask the question to ten people and get ten different answers; so it's good that you posted this question on Yahoo Answers! My guess is that from the majority of the varying answers, you'll be able to detect a theme in the answers.

Here's mine:

The origins of "music" most likely came from old chants. Think about ancient monks and how their songs were without lyrics but were melodic nonetheless; and then think about Native Americans with their ritualistic drumming and chanting.

In a variety of cultures, music (and singing/chanting) was used to "summon" or pay homage to a higher Being. It was used to satisfy the spiritual aspects of their life.

Physiologically speaking, music can be extremely beneficial because it can be quite meditating. Here's a test: check your pulse...jot it down. Then, slowly hum for five minutes--you might need to start off with a familiar tune, but try to hum your own, creative melody...let it trail off and see where it takes you. When five minutes has passed, check your pulse again and it will likely be slower.

So, music is purposeful in that it helps meditate, it also helps celebrate--in a religious and social sense. Music exists in nature, either through a bird's hum, or a soothing howl in the wind.

Music is also very mathamatical. That's why it exists....cuz it's part of nature and part of science. Studies have shown that people in music programs perform better at math scores. Octaves, scales, rhtyms, etc are all numbers/mathamatical based and you end up using the same side of the brain that you use when figuring out a math problem!

Music is perhaps a way to express human emotions with or without speech. When there is a need to express oneself, there needs to be a receiver of the message. Thus, music serves as another means of communication for us social beings.
Its beginning has exsisted in a much more rudimentary form as the present. Perhaps the earliest human ancestor mocked an animal, perhaps he/she enjoyed certain sounds in nature and tried to reproduce them, perhaps he/she felt the need to beat something in a fit of anger, etc. I believe that music exists as a form of art and communication.

It exists more than just to entertain. As someone who cannot go a day without hogging the computer, radio or T.V. just to listen to music, I can't imagine someone asking this question.Since you already have I don't have to. lol. music in human life is to soothe the soul. It is a source of stress relief.
REMEMBER MUSIC COMES IN MANY FORMS. From the birds chirping, the frogs croaking and the sound of a river to genres such as rock to classical to hip hop. Its all about what suits you.

i think that song can help to treatment our soul, if certainly our soul desires curing contained in the 1st place. The song this is interior us must be (a minimum of partly) the soul and as a result it somewhat is our inner state of being in its maximum enlightened type. A surge of organic altruistic emotion (like exhilaration, happiness, understanding something deep down appropriate) tells us that our inner being accepts and is familiar with issues that our extensive unsleeping minds do no longer. i will in ordinary terms describe the journey of this is 2 techniques (of path our reaction to it little doubt is rather unique and private).. a million. is organic untainted blinding super mild observed with a bubble burst of complete utter happiness 2. Is a gray hill the place no person else exists yet all of us are there, waiting to be reborn (i think of) speaking effectively at the same time with out asserting a observe and then only all disappearing into dirt. The song interior us in different words is ourselves on the closest achieveable element of interacting with our author. desire this facilitates.
