people hate it because of a few reasons:

1. they don't understand it. and I don't me the vocals. I mean people don't "get" the guitars, long hair and the overall sound and look.

2. because metal gives the finger to what is considered mainstream and "straight-edged".

3. metal represents rebellion, anger, being yourself and most of all, truth

4. they are too closed minded to give it a chance

I don't hate it at all. It used to be my favorite kind of music. I'm in my mid-thirties, and back when I was in my teens and twenties, I listened to bands like Metallica, Maiden, Sabbath, Megadeth, Motorhead, Anthrax, and others all the time. However I've been to a few metal shows, and frankly the crowd behavior was a real turn-off for me. (Fighting, throwing stuff at random people for no good reason [anything from mud to empty bottles], etc.) While I'm not suggesting that everyone was doing that, or that nobody does these things at other kinds of concerts, it just seemed that it was a lot more prevalent at metal shows for some reason. Plus I got tired of the "overgrown 12-year old" personalities of some performers (James Hetfield comes to mind, but he's not alone.) Having said that though, I still enjoy listening to metal every once in a while, just not as much as I used to.

Because people have different tastes. You may not like pop or classical music....doesnt make it bad, its just not your cup of tea.

Plus theres always the misconceptions with Metal, such as the stereotype that metalheads are devil worshipers. Or that we are all angry violent people. True there are some who are that, but that doesnt represent the whole. What about the metal ballads....its very melodic.....

I myself love all music, from hardcore metal and punk to easy listening smooth jazz.....to truely appreciate music you have to find what makes it move in you.

because it isn't 3 minute pop songs with beach boys vocal harmonies [which covers even most rock bands]. also the anger of metal scares most people off.
metal is about doing what you want as a musician, not what radio fans want to hear. well, at least it was for a while. now it's gonna be like the 80's all over again. [crappy POP groups pretending to be metal, wearing a UNIFORM].

Yeah, it's because of the aesthetics of it; loud, fast, shouty. Makes it inaccessable. Compositionally as well; lack of verse-chorus song structures, reduced emphasis on lyrics which in turn have a reduced emphasis on the famliar boy/girl/I'm sad themes of popular mainstream music (that is guitar/alternative music - indie et al). This all makes it difficult for the average indie fan/NME reader to understand and incorporate into their worldview.

Then the way metallers dress, seperating themselves off in a subcultural sense provokes an equal, opposite reaction in the general pleb, as it's oftentime meant to.

On top of this there seems to be a small-minded, lingering bias against metal in the music press, possibly for the reasons above, possibly a hangover from hair metal given further momentum by nu-metal. Because most 'music fans' these days inherit their opinions, likes/dislikes and, by-proxy, their entire record collections from these 'proper' music publications their attitude to metal is inherited also.

In short becuse metallers actively choose to be different and because metal chooses to be different in a way which evokes the small-minded reaction in people which is disseminated amongst the Karen O and Pete Doherty clones of the world who, in turn, others turn to as a yardstick of musical relevance and cool.

Well the truth is that classical and jazz musicians can out play the average metal guitarist, but that doesn't mean I hate metal. I like much of it, but I also realize it is not the most complex genre. That title would go to Jazz.

I think that people don't like metal because it is harder listening compared to say... John Mayer. People might not also like metal because there is on sometimes a lot of screaming going on. Screaming to some people makes them nervous. Some People just choose to listen to more softer music. It is all a matter of taste.

MY dad's personal opinion on metal is that he says it is too frantic. he likes metal, just not the new stuff. He says he doesn't know how you can listen to something that goes too fast he was brought up on bands like black sabbath, so thats what he listens to now. i think the kind of music you listen to as a child will greatly influence your music choices all throughout your life.

I don't hate it
It's just cause alot of people assume that metal is just senseless screaming, but they just have the wrong idea of metal cause they never listen to any good metal. To tell you the truth, I have no idea what they hear and think is rock.

For the same reason that some people hate Rap, and some people hate Country. It's just a matter of personal preference.

We all have different tastes in music...And personally, I think that's one of the most beautiful things about it! We can all listen to what inspires us, and let everyone else listen to what inspires them.
