If I want to use a widely available image of a public figure, say Larry King, on my own website, how do I make sure whether it is in the public domain thus having no copyright protection? Since usually it is the photographer that owns the copyright, is there a simple way to find out whom the photographer is, or I should contact the public figure directly? What about those images floating on the internet that are TV screen shots of Larry King broadcasting? Are they safe to use?

i think yes its just like when you watch the s*perbowl they say it can't be reproduced without their permission so just ask CNN and maybe they'll give you the permission or they'll tell you that you don't need any what will it hurt but if you do need permission and don't get it then you can get in big trouble most likely a fine of about 250,000

most public figures and celebrities have standard photos they will give you on request. you need to go to a publicist, fan club, or sponsoring network and ask.
