From what I have read the highest minimun wage paid is $7.85 an hour (thats sad enough) but u figure this at a 40 hour work week. In my state minimun wage is $5.15. And gas prices now an average where I live at $3.30 a gallon. It would take 1/4 of thier weekly earnings to full up their gas tank. This is a sad sad situation. I'm lucky. My husband has a good job and we live a comfortable life. But I often find myself wondering how the younger ones in my family my nieces and nephews can afford to live. Its so sad what is happening. I hope and pray someone will lead our country to better times soon!

Life is very hard for the working poor and elderly poor. Leadership of this country should be especially sensitive to inflation and the cost of basic necessities. I also can't see where illegal immigration helps the working poor either. I do volunteer "Read to Learn" work and can tell you adult education is a cheap alternative to a lot of problems.

Why don't people understand why minimum wage is low? Heres' how it works. Minimum wage is a starting wage for unskilled labor. I work in the same industry that I did when I was 16 I started in 1986 working part time making minimum wage which at that time was $3.35 an hour 20 years later that has now doubled! and 20 years later a make almost $17.00 which for the area that i live in with the cost of living is a very very good job. If I lived in say California or New York I doubt I could make it on that salary. The reason I make a good living is because I learned a trade, and stuck with it. So do you think that someone working at McDonalds flipping burgers or making fries should be able to make more then minimum wage? They can teach anyone to flip burgers in less then an hour, It's unskilled labor, and paying someone more then minimum wage for unskilled labor is stupid from a business standpoint. If you raise minimum wage you also have to raise the price of your products. A big mac is already almost $4.00 do you want to pay $8.00 for a hamburger?

the minimum wage in San Francisco is $8.62 an hour, that's because any income lower than 50k a year is considered poverty level. Also, gasoline here is 3.99 a gallon for premium (and that was before memorial day weekend).

I also think most people that live and work in S.F. take public transportation, I know I did at one point, although bus and subway faire have gone up as well.

Everything is going up. My electric bill, my cable bill, my ph. bill, even my grocery bill. Has anyone else noticed this?

Also, it is way more expensive to see live entertainment and sports. I don't see how a family of 4 can even afford to go on vacation these days.

Your young ones can afford to live because you and your husband are good parents who have instilled in your children fear of the wooden spoon and a work ethic to compete for grades in school and have their eyes set on college after high school.

Thanks to my parents, I have not worked for minimum wage (unskilled labor) since college. A full tank of gasoline at current prices is about 3% of what I earn per week as a skilled and experienced accountant and MBA.

$5.15 an hour and $2.89 a gallon, the two are undesirable! how one is meant to stay to tell the story $5.15 an hour is previous me and truly in the event that they might desire to purchase gas, yet at minimum salary i doubt one even has a motor vehicle!!! it truly is only no longer appropriate!
