I in the middle of my sophmore and junior year in high school and i plan on playing varsity football as the center, but there is just one problem, my size. I am around 5'71/2 to 5'8" and I weigh around 180 pounds. How much should i be weighing if i want to play at the varsity level?

Well, it all depends on you're height an strength, you don't necessarily have to be fat ans heavy and real slow. You need strength, and size does help so you won't get shoved on your **** every time you move.

For your height, you need to weigh no more than 200 pounds, and make sure you are very strong, and not just a 200 pound guy. Sure, you can be 200 pounds, doesn't mean anything if your weak, and slow. Make sure you can be pushing around 300 pounds on bench and around 400 to 500 pounds on squat if you are that weight.

Now, most average lineman weigh from 225 all the way to 300 pounds, most of them are going to be a good 6 feet plus in height. Since you're a sophomore/junior, you probably won't grow anymore, but many guys do grow until the age of 21 to 24. I just wasn't one of them, you may grow, you may not/ Whatever your hieght is, make sure that you don't weight any more than 300 pounds, unless of course you're 6'8" and need the weight, but I see you getting no taller than 6'3, saying that, a good weight for you would be about 250. It's overweight, yes, but you won't die if you're healthy either.

Lastly, if you can't gain weight, and don't get any heavier, just some advice, if you are somewhat strong, and fast, I'd look into LB, or FB or even TE, but, of course, your coach will help you with that. Just thought you might want to know that too. Because a 200 pound lineman usually can't do much, unless you're the hulk, you're just small for a lineman, which is good, you want to be a special player, like LB for example. Good luck no matter what bro. Have fun in football this coming year!

A few year back the local Catholic school won a mid-class state title with a nose guard who won the state title in wrestling at 130 or 135 pounds. None of the 200 pound linemen could block him, and he caused havoc everywhere. His brother, a state heavyweight wrestling placer, played linebacker. Size isn't everything.

It all depends on the size of your school and your opponents. A lot of the schools in my area have 200 pound linemen all across the line. 5'8", 180 is pretty stocky, so the question of weight really isn't that important. Being able to snap well is more important at center than pure size, so work on your snapping and exchange with the QB.

If you are at a big school with a lot of bigger kids, work on your long snapping. Long snappers can win or lose games, and it is a specialty even in the NFL. Patrick Mannelly of the Bears only job is as the long snapper for field goals and punts; and he'll probably be around as long as he wants to be.

If you really want to play on the line you should ask your parents to move to a small town. In some states small towns play football with less than 11 players on the field. At those school districts it is not unusual to only have a couple extra players on the team, which would greatly incrase your odds of being able to play your desired position. Your team might not be very good, but at least you'd get to play.

That all depends on what level of high school ball you are playing. At 5A or some states have a 6A a starting OL is probably in the 250 to 260 range on average.. At a 1A or some states have a class B that average is probably more like in the 200 to 220 range.. I started for a 5A high school at OG at 225 and I was one of the smaller OL in our division.

As long as your coach has a standard, I would say in high school you can be really effective at your current weight. Your focus should be on your technique and footwork. I would talk to your coach to get his oppinion on this. That will give you the answer.
