I just bought a home and I have about 7,000
sq. ft backyard. It is full of every weed you may think of. I contacted a lanscaping company and they said to redo from scratch it would be 3000 dollars. I'm thinking about doing a DIY with my husband. Any advice

It depends on your definition of fast and the landscapers definition of scratch. Grass is hard to kill and I wouldn't use roundup or such all over the area if you want to grow something new. First I would mow what you can. Then I would purchase some bulk WEED GUARD GROUND COVER and staples from FarmTek http://www.FarmTek.com/ (or the equivalent), cover the area with this fabric and staple it down. You can buy it in 100 ft and 300 ft rolls, in widths from 3 ft to 12 ft. Then leave it there until its time in late summer to prepare for seeding or planting. If you know where you want grass, just remove the plastic in that section. For trees, shrubs, plant beds, you can cut through the plastic and cover with mulch. NOTE: If you have the time, energy and money , spread several truckloads of top soil and compost over the area first and smooth it out. Top soil has weed seeds too. If you already have a Landscape Plan you can prioritize where to put the ground cover, top soil and compost and save even more. Good luck !

Just be sure to tell them what type of grass you have (assuming you have some left, hehe) since some of the products will harm certain types of grass as well.
