It seems we no longer teach the benefits of spending time and money to the help communities, this country, or the world. Our country can strengthen these human values and improve the world by requiring young people to spend a year working in some type of community service. Give me feedback on this statement what can we do instead, what are you thoughts on this issue

I would think every generation says that about the generation they have spawned. I would say that most teens in my community do try to help out in at least some small way. I dont think making people do community service would change anything much. Wanting to help should come from the heart, and cannot really be "taught".

Well, that doesn't necessarily describe young people as it does describe people in general. People are selfish. I don't think that requiring young people to spend a year working in some type of community service would make much of an impact at all. People are always going to do what's in their best interest first. Many colleges look at applicants community service, and other extra curricular activities already. Of those that volunteer, most just do it for college and are effected very little by it. What we need to do is get rid of this relativist view of life and morals. Nobody seems to care because if we believe we are just more evolved animals and life amounts to the survival of the fitest then why would you want to help someone weaker or in need? Teaching the theory of evolution in school is what is hurting us. When people forget they were created and cling on to a view that life was/is an accident than I wouldn't expect much from them either.

It's sad that alot of people only see themselves and only care about them self. Nowadays people in our country are obsessed with money and fame. Look at the rise of Paris Hilton, and reality T.V. Like Dr.King said we need a revolution of Values! On the other hand, since 9-11 student and elderly volunteer-ship has risen sharply so maybe the media may project our society has being narcissistic but the people have proved during the disasters we've faced has a world and a nation that they care!

I agree with you. It seen young people today are very spoiled. A lot have well to do parents and they have far more then when I was young. They seem to expect it as their right when it's not. I think doing some work in a community service may show them real life. That things don't always work out, and how lucky they really are. Perspective.

You're right people are so concerned in feeling equity through posession, ultimately making this world an unfriendlier comunity. I think the stars are doing a lot of difference for that though. Last years young girls only had people like paris hilton to look up to. And now, there are people who wants to show compassion outside of money like angie, jessica simpson etc.

This is something that really bothers me.
The media has great influence in society and yet they prefer to use this power to distract, to create more consumers of "necessities".
I guess we can thank all the Sarah Jessica Parkers, Paris Hiltons, Eva Longorias, etc. of the world, because every time somebody interviews them, they can only talk about shoes. What's the matter with that.
