Well, I think he's not fast enough to be a winger. I prefer Aaron Lennon's style. But Lennon is very young. Perhaps McClaren prefers experienced player. And the most important thing, Beckham can help England to win the match when their strikers forget how to make goals (unfortunately, this happens now and again...).

he is a great symbol in England. he served the country for years and now they are paying him back in a sense. he may not be the best player now but he is a veteran
