Banks will not close a joint account without all parties consenting to it for the very reason you are talking about. Couples with joint accounts break up and the bank does not want the liability of allowing only one person to close it when they don't know anything about your personal life.
If they will not at least take you off the account, write a letter to the bank and personally hand it to the branch manager or mail it certified so you have proof of delivery. Inform them that any transactions on the account as of that date are the sole responsibility of your ex. This may help protect you in the event that she overdraws the account and refuses to pay it back.

NEVER under ANY circumstances open a joint account with anyone and put all your money into it unless you have been married to them for at least 5 years If you must have a joint account then transfer money from your own account into to it. but each person on the account must agree to put an agreed amount into the account each week/month Keep a track of payments in to make sure the other person keeps THEIR side of the agreement and pays THEIR money in. If they stop then YOU stop. Use the joint account to pay joint bills. YOU have now found out what can happen if you DONT do this Most joint accounts are opened so that any transaction can be done with the authorisation of either party In this case yes its legal and yes he can take ALL the money out, aND close the account. Cos it AINT your money - it belongs to BOTH of you. And EITHER party can withdraw it. And NEITHER party has to inform the other as to what they are doing So the answer is- you CANT get your money back - cos it aint "your" money (Putting it into a joint account it became his as much as yours, and he withdrew it which he was entitled to do)

How do you accidentally deposit money in the joint account? Get rid of any deposit tickets you have for that account. If you bank on-line, have your name taken off the account and it should not appear next time you log on. Beyond that, PAY ATTENTION to the account you are selecting to deposit money into. If that is to much to ask, the joint account is not your real problem.

I'm not sure how the UK does their banking, however you should be able to close the account without your ex. There is no way to have someone simply taken off the account, it needs to be closed and another opened accordingly.

You should be able to take your name off the account, but that won't prevent you from accidentally depositing money into it, so be careful, since if you put money in by mistake, you wouldn't be able to take it back out.
