I seriously doubt it was a lack of live foods, they do prefer live foods and do better when they get them, but can live well on prepared foods as well. I would be more willing to blame a small spike in ammonia or nitrites, most corys need a quite mature tank to do well. Of course, it could be something else entirely.

Very unlikely that not giving it live food would be the cause however, you may find that it being on its own could be a possiblity theyre very social type fish which should be kept in groups of 5 plus.

Other than that we would need to know the parameters that it was kept in.

Cories are very sensitive to water quality...chances are your water quality is off. I feed mine shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and other sinking food. I've never fed mine live food (though I'm sure they eat swordtail fry).
