If he is hanging near one side of the glass I would also suspect bullying by other fish instead of a disease problem. Try sitting across the room from the tank very still for a while and watch to see how they interact and see if one or more other fish are bullying the one at the surface.

I've seen this before in Cichlid tanks - and although this may not be the cause in your case, in the cases I've seen, it's usually a result of the fish being bullied by other Cichlids in the tank. You may want to remove the Fish and isolate him. Other than that, I'd advise the normal - check water parameters (including temperature), perform a water change, and inspect your fish for any agressive behavior or signs of infection/parasites.

i also have cichlids and one of mine did the same thing for about a week then it died the other fish may be attacking it during the night some times they do this when the fish is ill other times they do this simply to reject the fish this happends mostly with convicts and african cichlids

These are the symptoms of a sick cichlid, i would isolate the cichlid, and then make sure everything in your tank is as usual, nitrate, pH, ammonia, and temperature.

He's obviously not dead because he's still upright, however without any symptoms its difficult to say, have you checked your water parameters are there any marks on the fish, what sort of fish is it? and so on.
