The reason I don't say Babe Ruth is because he was not a 5 tool player. Yeah he was a pretty good pitcher, yeah he could pummel the ball, but he definitely was not known for his defense. You want the greatest baseball player ever you got to look at hitting, fielding, the whole works. Not just his hitting (He didn't pitch long enough to determine how good he really was, granted during the time he was a full time starter he did great, I still think he didn't pitch long enough to see how good he really was).

I'm going to say Ted Williams. He may not have been the greatest outfielder, because of lack of speed, bu that's what the Monster was for, besides, he never missed a cut off man. On to offense, he lost 5 years to war, in his prime no less. That was a time they speculate he would have hit anywhere between 35 and 45 homers a year. He also says if he was faster, he would have hit over .400 every year. He may not have 3000 hits, but he collected a ton of walks. Plus he holds the single season record for consecutive games reaching base safely.
I could also make a case for Joe Jackson. Mind you his career was nothing spectacular cause of the scandal, but even Babe Ruth said he copied Jackson's swing.

heres the deal, I say Babe Ruth was the greatest player ever. Many people forget that he was also a pretty good pitcher as well. Ruth had a 94 wins and 46 lost as a pitcher an ERA of 2.28. Not only that out himself, Aaron and Bonds, Ruth got to 714 homeruns fastest at 2503 games! It took Aaron around 2964 games and Bonds 2750 and not only that Ruth had less games per season than Aaron or Bonds.

Babe Ruth.
There have been great players, but no other player comes to close to the impact the Babe had on the game of baseball. With his amazing knack of hitting the long ball he reinvented the game we have come to know and love.
