In a space ship there is air. Outside a space ship, they use radio. Radio waves travel through a vacuum.

They use radio waves which are electromagnetic waves (same as light) that do not require a medium. (or, for those who insist that the space-time fabric is a medium, then the radio photons use the same medius as light photons).
