I don't think we'll be a second world country soon... except in terms of civil liberties. I sometimes get the feeling that we'll be a first-world totalitarian country before we know what hits us... and instead of rebelling, we'll embrace the totalitarianism because it's in the name of "homeland security".

Ben Franklin said that a person that would give up essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither, but the people around me seem to be doing that every day and calling it patriotic. Nobody seems to care about the values that America is really based upon -- freedom, liberty, small government, etc. People want someone to blame for everything. They want a bigger government to pay for everything with other people's money, someone to sue for their problems, etc. .

I do get scared sometimes.

Although things can seem pretty bad in parts of this country... we are a long way away from being a 2nd World Country. I've been to Mexico and the Philippines which I guess are considered by most to be 2nd world and the sure number of poor and lower middle class makes it painfully obvious that they have a long way to go to reach our daily standards of life. I think the division between rich and poor might be worse now then before, but in 99% of the cases our poor would be considered middle class in a lot of countries.

No it's not possible at this point in time for the USA to be a second world country. For one, the US is the richest country. And second, while it's true that third world conditions exist in some areas, that's true of other first world nations also.
