Hello there, hope your day has been well.

My question to you is the following and I would appreciate the help. I have a pretty complete idea of what to do, but I deffinitely am a tad obscure about it, and would like some verification. The question is:

For a recipe of banana bread, you need 3/4 cups of flour, 1/3 cup of butter, 2/3 cup of sugar, 1 spoon of pate powder, 2 eggs, 3 bananas and 1/2 a spoon of salt.
a) I've already done this but...
b) Meghan only has 2 cups of sugar left; To make bread with all this sugar, how much salt will she need? How much butter will she need?

Thank you in advanced, and can you show your steps too? I usually wouldn't be getting homework help offline, but it's not homework; I'm studying for our test and this is a revision question. Thanks a load.

You will effectively triple the recipe if you use 2 cups of sugar, since 2 divided by 2/3 is 2/1 x 3/2 or 6/2 or 3 (triple).
So you need :
3/4 x 3/1 = 9/4 -- or 2 1/4 cups of flour
1/3 x 3/1 = 3/3 -- or 1 cup of butter
2/3 x 3/1 = 6/3 -- or 2 cups of sugar
1 x 3 = 3 -- or 3 spoons of pate powder
2 x 3 = 6 -- or 6 eggs
3 x 3 = 9 -- or 9 bananas
1/2 x 3/1 = 3/2 -- or 1 1/2 spoons of salt

She has 2 cups of sugar but only needs 2/3 of a cup/ So she has 3 times as much sufgar as she nees. If you are asking how much of each ingredient is needed if she uses all the sugar, then just multiply everything by 3. So she would need 1.5 spoons of salt, 1 cup of butter, 6 eggs, etc.

b) Meghan only has 2 cups of sugar left; To make bread with all this sugar, how much salt will she need? How much butter will she need?

In this problem, we use direct variation. The formula for direct variation is
y=kx

Where y varies directly with x.
let x=the amount of sugar
let y=the amount of butter

So, in the first one we have
x=2/3
y=1/3

We plug them into y=kx
1/3=k(2/3)
Solve for k.
k=3/6, or 1/2

So, in the second one, we have x=2.

Plug k and x into y=kx.
y=1/2(2)
y=1

Meghan needs 1 cup of butter.

For the salt, use the same equation, y=kx.
This time, let y=the amount of salt.

So, we have
x=2/3
y=1/2

plug into y=kx
1/2=2/3k

Solve for k.
k=1/2 x 3/2
k=3/4

In the second one we have x=2.
plug in x and k in y=kx.
y=2(3/4)
y=6/4
y=3/2

Meghan needs 1 cup of butter and 3/2 spoonfuls of salt.

Good luck. ;) Hope this helps

You asked for just salt and butter ?
2 cups = 3 times the sugar. (2 ÷ 0.666)
So, she'll need 1½ spoons of salt and 1 cup of butter.
(3 times original recipe.)

You need 2/3 cup..but have 2 cups..so you have 3 times the amount you need. To figure out how much of the rest to make up for that extra amount..you multiply the other amounts by 3.
So 1 cup of butter. 3/2 cup of salt (1 and 1/2 cup)

2 cups of sugar is 3 times the 2/3 needed

1/2 teaspoon times 3 is 3/2 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup butter x 3= 1 cup butter.

2 = (2/3)m
2(3/2) = m
3 = m

the multiple is 3. multiply the needed amount of each ingredient by 3.

3( 1/2 tsp salt) = 1 1/2 tsp salt
3( 1/3 cup butter) = 1 cup butter
and so on.

alright, there are 6 thirds in 2, right? yes! =)
2/3 times 3 equals 2.
this will be a triple recipe as my mom would call it.
then you take 1/2 and multiply it by 3!
the answer is...
1 and 1/2 spoons of salt! =)

(= GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TEST!!! =)
