I just got a Chilean Rose tarantula, so i had to move it into a bigger cage, but i didn't know how to pick it up. This made it harder to get him(or her) in there. I am also a little nervous. I would be a lot less scared if i just picked it up once. How should i do this? and how can you tell its a boy or girl?

I find it best to avoid actually grasping the spider in any way but rather encourage it to crawl onto my hand. Sudden, startled movements on your part will also startle and frighten your spider so try to remain slow and calm. Just put a flat hand a couple inches in front of her and give her a gentle touch toward the rear of her abdomen. She should just crawl onto your hand. I would suggest doing this for the first time on the floor or very close to a table surface as tarantulas can be fatally injured in falls. If you remain nervous but have to move her just use the same technique to get her into a container. Sexing them is a bit trickier. Males tend to have smaller abdomens but that is far from definitive. The sure way is to have someone experienced with spiders examine their shed skin. It will contain the shed skin from the sexual organs. If she is an adult she may not shed for many months. Be aware that shedding spiders frequently lay flat on their backs. First time owners frequently think their pet is dead or dying. Do not touch them during the shed process and remove any feeder insects as well. Enjoy your new tarantula. I've had my Rose-hair for 12 years.

I have a Chilean Rose Hair too, they are really the nicest tarantulas around. I handle her quite often and have had no problems so far. My advice would be to gently touch its rear coaxing it forward towards your other hand. This works for me, just dont make any sudden movements and it helps if your tarantula is not hungry.

I am still learning how to tell their sex, but I've heard that females have larger abdoments and live longer. An expert can tell from its shed skin if it was male or female. Have fun!

You just scoop her up. But be aware that she will feel like she pricking you. I don't suggest you hold her often, even though roses are known for being doctile, she sill may be irritated with you and throw hair. They're not really meant to be held. Females are normally larger.
