There are a number of factors in any accident, and no two accidents are caused by exactly the same thing.

However, the most common reason for accidents on jetskis is that they can only be steered while the throttle is pulled - they have no rudder or passive steering system. Steering is accomplished by turning the water-jet one way or the other, and the water jet is the same one that is used to propel the watercraft in the water.

So when a rider is trying to slow down while at the same time trying to turn in order to avoid hitting something, they find that they cannot turn while the throttle isn't engaged. They end up hitting what they were trying to avoid.

The habit people have from driving is to turn while hitting the brakes; this doesn't work on a jetski!

Jetskis are very dangerous beasts. The fundamental problem is that you only can steer when going. Usually what happens to beginners, is that they go too fast, or find themselves coming up on an obstructions. Instinctively they let go of the throttle to stop. Then they have no control and end up crashing into whatever, or whoever was in front of them. The other problem is that they go fast, but are usually used close to shore, where there is a lot of traffic.

Best advice: if you want to go boating, get a real boat. A small 14' runabout will cost less used, than a jetski, go just as fast and last a lot longer. ....and you can have your arm around your favorite chickie, while skimming the waves.

They are just going every which way and often cross paths.
