"Motown" was a record label started in the '60s to promote and market musical contributions by African American soloists and groups.
The name comes from the city of Detroit, Michigan and is short for Motor Town.
During that time period, most of the record labels were predominately owned by caucasians and therefore did not cater to the type of music offered by African American performers. In order to make a big impact in the music field and to get known, they went to Motown Records, because they were the preferred clients in the beginnings of that label.
Now, of course, they cater more to a music style than a race or ethnic group, though their clientele remains mostly African American.

Motown was sort of a new thing in music when it was created. A lot of musicians got together, like a very big band (maybe 15 or 20 players) and they would have different singers come in and sing with them. The singer would make an album with the large group, then another singer would make a different album with the same group, then another, and another... And eventually the group had a lot of albums out all a the same time. The result was that they (these 20 people) were able to control an entire market of music much better because they had so much music out in such a short time.

Detroit, Michigan. It is short for Motor Town because all three of the major American Auto makers have factories there.
