Or is it something that has to be practiced since childhood in order to work? If it's possible to learn it in 20s, which exercises/stretches, techniques, etc would help in accomplishing this, and how often do they need to be performed?

ur not 2 old. just try these exercises at least once a day. first warm up by running or even just after a bath or shower.

first, keeping ur legs straight, stand and bend at the waist to touch ur toes and hold for half a minute. do the same again only sitting down with ur legs out in front of u.

nxt kneel down and place one leg in front of u and without bending it lower you chest on2 it as far as it will go.

then bend the straight leg forward so you r in a forward lunge positioon. ur back leg should be stretched out behind u, bent and resting on the ground. keep ur back up straight and lean in2 ur front leg. try to relax as this will help u go down further. if u tense up ur muscles will contract and push u upwards, so the stretch wont b of as much use.

after all this place ur front leg out into splits with ur hands at the side to support u. again try to relax. hold for half a minute, then if its comfortale enough life ur hands off the ground and jus hold them out 2 the side. ur body will slide in2 the splits better then- just remember to relax and not overstrain!

Good luck!

Yes, you can learn at 20 and even later. The older you get, the longer it will take you to acheive them, but it is possible.
Ideally, you need to stretch twice a day for 30 minutes to an hour. Depends on how much time you have. Once a day is pretty good too. Once a week will take you nowhere. You get the picture. But don't push yoursef too much at the start or you will be sore for days.

Make sure you warm up before you stretch. For me, I don't consider myself warmed up till I broke a sweat.
Exersises depend a little bit on how far away you are from the floor. If you're close, just attempt the splits, hold them for like a minute. If you're far away - lie on your back with your butt to the wall. Put your legs up on the wall in the shape of letter V. Relax and feel the stretch. There are many more exersises.

Certainly, although it takes a bit longer for adults whereas children can do it almost naturally. When I trained in kung fu, we did stretches 3-4 times a week to increase flexibility, and it took me almost a year of this before I could do the splits.

Stretching everyday for about 20 minutes should get you there much faster than I did it. Start with a butterfly stretch, pushing down on your knees, then put your feet straight in front of you and reach, and then get in each split position (middle, and each side) and go down as far as you can... hold it there for 1 minute each way.

Yes. Lots of hamstring stretches. Also the hips need to be stretched. So, do this.

Sit on floor, soles of feet pressed together. Lean forward, use your elbows to push down on your knees. Press and hold for 20 seconds ten or twenty times a day.

Sit on floor. One leg straight in front of you, foot pointing straight up. Sole of other foot pressed into the side of knee of your straight leg. Now lean forward, and try to touch your forehead on the knee of the straight leg. Get as far as you can, then hold for 20 seconds. Do this 10 times then swap legs.
Do this every day, and you should achieve front splits in 3-6 months, (depending on how limber you are now) and foull splits some time after that.

Yes it is possible to learn how to do the splits at 20, I suggest you go seek professonal help at a dance class, or at a gymnastic class, inorder to prevent injury, you can do the splits best when your muscles are warmed up so keep that in mind, don't worry It really is possible to learn how at this age 20 isn't too young, have fun and dance safe, : )

I would say a person in their 30s and 40s could learn to do the splits. You would have to stretch and start a little at a time. In about at least a month, I think a person could master the splits, regardless of age really.

It is not too late. All you have to do it push yourself a little further out every time you do the splits. What also helps, is when you slid down (sliding your legs apart still on two feet) and see how far you can go down. (How come talking about the splits sounds dirty?) It will take some time, though. I can't even do them perfectly.

Yes, daily stretching is the key. It usually takes about a month. Splits can be done at any age as long as you keep you warm up your muscles.

Hell yeah! All you have to do is work your way down to the floor. Each time you're watching TV get down on the floor and try to go down as far as you can to the floor.( only to your comfort, it shouldn't be painful) Sit on one leg for a minute and then switch, and then do straddle. And just relax when you are doing them; you'll go down farther. Don't bounce, you'll end up tearing something.
