My dog found a male turtle, but i dont know what type it is. it is yellow stripes on the sides of its head, a yellow stripe down its tail, and red stripes down its legs. Also, its shell is shedding, and the underside of its shell is yellow. i think it is a yellow bellied slider, but im not sure. also, is this turtle a snapping turtle? and can it be put in water? what does it eat? HELP IF YOU CAN!!!

Just FYI- if the belly is yellow, it is almost certainly NOT a Painted Turtle- they all have red/red-orange bellies. It is probably a Yellow-Belly Slider.

It is NOT a snapper- they have pale brown bellies and plain limbs.

Eat? I would not worry about that. I would STRONGLY suggest you release it ASAP. It takes quite a bit to make a good turtle habitat, and wild-caught, ESPECIALLY stressed out wild-caught turtles really do not make great pets.

Most likely this is a painted turtle. They are a very common turtle that lives in ponds, lakes and rivers. However, there is another species of turtle that is quite similar in appearance called the chicken turtle (depending on where you live). These turtles live almost entirely in the water, but this time of year may be found on land searching for a place to nest (they dig holes in the ground).
Painted turtles eat a variety of foods including insects, small fish, and some vegetation.
It is not wise to keep any wild animal, and should be released back where you found it.

I believe it is a Painted Turtle http://www.all-creatures.org/picc/turtle-painted-02.jpg

The shell "shedding" is normal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle See "SKIN & MOLTING".

Please return the turtle to the wild. NEAR WHER YOU FOUND IT. Turtles have a natural homing device and do not stray far from where they hatched. It is important that you do not take the turtle away from here and turn him loose somewhere else. He will try to go back. If he has to cross a road, he could be hit by a car.

This turtle does not need your help, you already saved him from your dog. He will be much happier in the wild. Wild kept captive turtles do not do well and often die from stress of being captured and kept. It is in his best interest that you return him.

In most states it is illegal to keep any wild animal as a pet.

Your correct..should be in water..all turtles snap but some are bone crunching snapping..it eats small fish and greens found around the pond.
Please don't keep it as a pet..it belongs back in the wild.
