You are an astronomer when YOU say you are. I don't care if you work at a bar serving beers. As long as you are continuing to learn, research and disseminate your ideas, you qualify. Just think of all the fabulous discoveries made by amateurs...people who practice astronomy just because they LOVE it. I was really fascinated by the whole Shoemaker Levy 9 event. Some really great science was done by people who didn't start out life as cutting-edge, fully employed scientists.
Enjoy your education and never stop learning. Best wishes!

If you want a _job_ as an astronomer, probably not until you get your Ph.D.! I'm surprised that you would have gone so far as getting your bachelor's without knowing that would only get you half way there.

I decided in high school I wanted to be an astronomer, and discovered after a lot of painful trying that I just didn't have the mathematical ability. I ended up getting a Ph.D. in anthropology, worked at that for a while, then other jobs. Three years ago, at an age I should have been retiring, I got a job with a museum as a planetarium instructor, and shortly after that a second job with an astronomy software company. So now I am a professional astronomer, being paid for what I love to do!

P.S. I gave an honest answer to your question, and you responded with a childish abusive personal attack on me. At least I'm honest in assessing my strengths and weaknesses, and not arrogant and ignorant, as you appear to be. Grow up! You might also learn to spell, if you expect to get a job as an astronomer.

I got a Bachelors and half of a Masters in Astronomy, but ended up as a computer geek. You really need a PhD to be a professional astronomer.

How about after your PhD?

Unfortunatly, unless you like teaching, you'll be hard pressed for a job.
