For me, a work of literature stands out if it has important meaning or themes. One of the best books I've read was The Things They Carried. Its about the Vietnam War, and you'll be boggled until the end just wondering if its fiction! I've also had some great class discussions about The Poisonwood Bible (there are so many important themes that relate to life now in this book) and even Shakespeare. My teacher has told me she choses a book and then does extensive research online about things to point out or talk about.
I would suggest having class discussions when teaching...it gets students sharing ideas and feeling comfortable talking to their peers.
Hope this helps!!

Its "universal value," that is, it has something of value for people of various cultural, ethnic, and religious persuasions that doesn't diminish with time. Shakespeare wrote in the 17th Century. That's 400 years ago. The Old Testament was written thousands of years ago. This is the same for all great works, be they music, art, or literature.
