This equation can be rewritten as:
(1/2)x + (1/4)x + (1/8)x + (1/16)x + (1/32)x.... = y
That's x * (1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + 1/32....) = y
and when you sum up the stuff in the parentheses, you get 1.

Hence, the equation turns into x = y, which answers your question.
