Did Bowie announce Ziggy's death in the press or something like that? Also, how did Ziggy die?

Basically David announced his last show as Ziggy at the infamous Hammersmith show which serves as the "movie" version of Ziggy Stardust. The character of Ziggy was actually killed as mentioned in the song "Ziggy Stardust" on the album. He eventually fell head over heals into his excess and the kids (his fans) killed him. I think it was explained once that they tore him apart or something.

ziggy was his alter ego so he just did not dress androgenously anymore which was the way that ziggy appeared in public and it was mentioned in a song by Spiders from Mars, Ziggy's group.
